At the 2017 World Poohsticks Championships we will be all about the purple. Volunteers will dress in purple, maybe competitors will dress in purple, we will have purple cakes and muffins, there will be purple flags and balloons, and we even have a few purple competition sticks.
“Why?” I hear you ask.
Well, all Rotarians, across the United Kingdom and across the world have been fighting alongside the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organisation and other groups to eradicate polio from the world. We are SO close to completing this task that we are all on what we hope will be a final push for the last few years to clear polio from the last few countries were it still affects young children, causing paralysis and horrible disabilities.
Yes but why purple?
Well, when a child receives the two drops of the polio vaccine, he or she is marked on their little finder with a purple pen. Just so that the vaccination teams can see who they have treated and to ensure that they don’t miss anyone. In the UK we have decided that Purple4Polio is a great idea. Many of us have embraced the colour and we won’t leave home without it. Look out for us at the Championships on 4th June, come and say hello to us and learn a little more about the amazing world wide eradication programme, and how we can help in Oxfordshire.
